Whangarei makes a practical base for exploring much of central Northland. The Tutukaka Coast — 30 minutes east — is the most rewarding short trip, with the beaches at Matapouri and Sandy Bay and dive boats to the Poor Knights Islands. The Whangarei Heads peninsula to the south fills an easy half-day with coast roads and short hikes.
Further afield, the Bay of Islands is 90 minutes north; Hokianga Harbour and the giant kauri trees of Waipoua Forest are about two hours west. Trounson Kauri Park, between Whangarei and Waipoua, has guided night walks that give a reliable chance of seeing kiwi in the wild.
