Limu Pools

The Limu Pools are a set of natural rock pools and reef channels on Niue's northwest coast, considered among the island's best snorkelling spots. The pools sit at the base of the coastal cliffs and are protected enough to enter safely in calm conditions; the coral formations inside are excellent and the fish life is prolific. Blue-banded sea kraits — the island's famous sea snakes — are frequently seen here.

Access involves a walk down from the coastal road. The pools are best at high tide, when the water is deepest and clearest. At low tide some areas are too shallow to snorkel comfortably. The surrounding coast is beautiful and largely empty; you may have the pools to yourself. Bring water, sun protection, and snorkelling gear — there are no facilities. The drive from Alofi takes about 20 minutes.

A story
Niue's waters hold around 200 species of fish, coral, and marine life — a remarkable density for a small island. The clarity is exceptional: visibility regularly exceeds 60 metres, making it one of the clearest ocean environments in the world. The island is also home to large numbers of yellow-lipped sea kraits, the banded sea snakes that glide through the reef. They are highly venomous but entirely non-aggressive.
