House of Taga

The House of Taga is a set of ancient Chamorro latte stone pillars in the village of San Jose, the most impressive prehistoric ruins in the Northern Marianas. Latte stones — tall coral or limestone columns topped with hemispherical capstones — were used as foundation posts for the houses of high-status Chamorros, raised between roughly 900 and 1700 AD.

Most of the original twelve pillars at this site have toppled over the centuries, but one still stands upright, giving a clear sense of the scale these structures once had. The site is easy to visit and sits right in the village — a remarkable fragment of pre-contact Pacific culture in an unlikely, unassuming setting.

A story
Taga was a legendary Chamorro chief said to have been of enormous physical strength. According to oral tradition, he erected the massive latte stones single-handedly. Whether or not the stories are true, the stones he supposedly raised are the largest known latte pillars in the Mariana Islands — some standing nearly five metres tall.
