Angaur is the only place in Micronesia where you can see wild monkeys. A small troop of long-tailed macaques, descended from animals brought by German phosphate miners more than a century ago, lives in the forest around the old mine workings and the abandoned settlements in the north of the island.
They are shy but visible, particularly around dawn and dusk when they come down to the road and the cleared areas to forage. Locals will often know where the troop has been seen recently. Do not feed them and keep a sensible distance — these are wild, opportunistic animals, not zoo macaques.
