The Sacred Heart Church sits on Koror's main commercial strip and is easy to miss between the dive shops and concrete shophouses. It is the Catholic parish church for Koror and a reminder that Palau was a Spanish possession from the 1500s until 1899, when Spain sold the islands to Germany after losing the Spanish-American War.
The current building is unspectacular but the small congregation it serves is interesting in itself: about half of Palauans are Catholic, the legacy of a Spanish missionary tradition that long outlasted Spanish rule. Pop in if you are walking the main road — it is open most days and takes ten minutes.
