Getting There

By Air

Honiara International Airport (HIR), also known as Henderson Field, is the main entry point. It sits on Guadalcanal, about 13km east of Honiara city centre. Taxis and minibuses cover the transfer in around 20 minutes.

Solomon Airlines is the national carrier and flies to Honiara from Brisbane (four times weekly), Nadi in Fiji, Port Moresby, and Port Vila. Fiji Airways connects through Nadi, which is the main regional hub for onward connections from Tokyo, Singapore, Los Angeles, and Vancouver. Air Niugini and Air Vanuatu also serve Honiara.

There are no direct flights from Europe or North America to Honiara. The usual routing is via Brisbane or Nadi. Expect total journey times of 20+ hours from Europe, 30+ hours from the US east coast.

Most arrivals land in the evening. The airport has basic facilities: currency exchange, a few shops, ATM. Arrange accommodation in Honiara for your first night regardless of which island you're ultimately heading to — onward domestic flights rarely connect same-day.

By Sea

Honiara is the main international port. Cargo ships occasionally carry passengers from neighbouring countries, but there is no regular international passenger ferry service. Visiting yachts arrive year-round, and the Solomons is a popular stop on the Pacific circuit.

Departure Tax

A departure tax is levied on international flights. Check the current rate when booking, as it changes periodically and may or may not be included in your ticket price.
