Lunga Point is the low promontory between the Lunga and Ilu river mouths, a couple of kilometres north of Henderson Field. The point gave its name to the airfield in the early weeks of the campaign and to a string of naval battles fought in the dark waters offshore. From the headland on a clear day you can see Savo Island and Florida Island across the strait — the geography of the night battles in Iron Bottom Sound laid out in front of you.
The waters offshore are now one of the world's most concentrated wreck-diving sites: destroyers, transports, and aircraft from both sides litter the seabed at depths ranging from a few metres to well beyond recreational limits. Tulagi Dive and the few other operators in Honiara run trips here. Even if you do not dive, the point is worth a stop — it is the easiest place to stand on the island and understand that the bombs, ships, and aircraft were not abstractions but were right here, just below the line where the water meets the sky.
