Getting There

New Georgia is reached by air or sea from Honiara, the Solomon Islands capital on Guadalcanal.

By air — Solomon Airlines operates scheduled flights between Honiara (HIR) and Munda (MUA) several times a week. The flight takes around 45 minutes and offers dramatic views of the island chains en route. Book well ahead; the aircraft are small (typically Twin Otters or Dash 8s) and popular routes fill quickly, particularly around public holidays. Fares are high by regional standards — budget USD 150–200 each way as a guide, though prices fluctuate.

By boat — A cheaper alternative is the weekly passenger-cargo vessel that operates between Honiara and the western islands, stopping at various points along the route. The journey to Munda takes 12–18 hours depending on the vessel and conditions. Conditions can be rough in open water between island groups; bring provisions and a good sleeping bag. Tickets are sold at the Honiara wharf.

From Gizo — Munda can also be reached from Gizo, the Western Province capital, by regular outboard canoe or speedboat across the Vonavona Lagoon. The crossing takes 45–90 minutes depending on sea conditions and vessel type.

There is no road connection between New Georgia and any other island. Once on the island, transport between settlements is by outboard motorboat or on foot. Hire boats through your accommodation.
