Munda Town

Munda is the main settlement on New Georgia — the administrative centre, the market hub, and the base for most travellers exploring the western Solomons. It is a small, spread-out town of a few thousand people clustered around the airport and the waterfront at Munda Point. There is a hospital, a market, a handful of trade stores, and several guesthouses and lodges.

The waterfront is the social heart of Munda, where outboard-powered canoes arrive and depart throughout the day, trading goods between villages across the lagoon. The morning market on the waterfront sells fresh fish, root vegetables, and local produce. It is worth an early start.

Agnes Lodge and the Zipolo Habu Resort are the main accommodation options and both double as booking points for diving, snorkelling, and village tours. The Munda War Museum holds a small but worthwhile collection of WWII artefacts recovered from the surrounding jungle and lagoon — helmets, shell casings, aircraft parts — along with photographs and maps of the 1943 campaign.

Munda has no bank with a reliable ATM. Bring sufficient Solomon Islands dollars in cash from Honiara. Credit cards are accepted at the larger lodges but not elsewhere.
