The smaller of Nanumanga's two inland lagoons, Ha'apai sits at the south end of the island, surrounded by the gardens and pulaka pits of the main villages. The water is brackish and shallow; villagers fish it informally and use the surrounding ground for traditional swamp-taro cultivation.
The lagoon is less than a kilometre from the main village landing and easy to reach on foot. A short walking path with views over the reef and out to sea makes a pleasant late-afternoon stroll. Locals will usually be happy to explain the taro pits and the seasonal cycle of planting and harvest.
