Wildcat Wreck

A Grumman F4F Wildcat fighter lies in the bush on the northeastern side of Nanumea, mostly intact except for the engine. It was one of several aircraft based on the wartime airstrip in 1943–44, lost on or shortly after landing and never recovered. The wings, cockpit, and tail are still recognisable, and the markings on the fuselage are faintly visible where the paint has not flaked off.

Children from Lolua will lead you to the wreck for a modest fee and will, if pressed, point out two further crash sites in the bush nearby. The location is unmarked and the ground around it is rough — wear long trousers and closed shoes, and do not climb on the wreckage.
