Getting Around

Getting around Samoa is easy and inexpensive, though things run on Samoan time — be patient.

Buses

Brightly painted wooden buses criss-cross Upolu from early morning until late afternoon, radiating out from two terminals in Apia: Fugalei Market and the Savalalo Fish Market terminal. Fares are among the cheapest in the Pacific — the maximum fare is around WST 12. Buses don't run to fixed timetables, and drivers may stop at shops along the route. For exploring beyond the beaten track, combine buses with taxis.

Taxis

Taxis are plentiful on both Upolu and Savai'i. They are not metered, so agree on a price before you set off. Rates are reasonable; a cross-island trip on Upolu costs roughly WST 60–80.

Rental cars

Car rental is available at Faleolo Airport and in Apia. Samoa drives on the left (traffic was switched from the right in 2009). Roads on Upolu are mostly sealed; Savai'i has more unsealed stretches. An international driving licence is accepted.

Ferry between Upolu and Savai'i

The Samoa Shipping Corporation runs vehicle and passenger ferries between Mulifanua Wharf on Upolu and Salelologa Wharf on Savai'i. The crossing takes about 60 to 90 minutes and runs several times daily. A VIP lounge ticket gets you air conditioning and a snack for a small extra charge.

Smaller islands

Boat transfers on demand connect Upolu to Manono, Namu'a, and the Aleipata islands. Ask at your guesthouse or at the relevant wharf for current schedules and fares.
