Getting There

Samoa's main international gateway is Faleolo International Airport (APW), about 35 km west of Apia on Upolu. The drive into town takes 30 to 40 minutes by taxi or shuttle.

By air

Airlines flying direct to Faleolo include Air New Zealand (Auckland), Fiji Airways (Nadi, Honolulu), Qantas (Sydney), Virgin Australia (Sydney, Brisbane), and Samoa Airways, which connects Apia to Auckland, Sydney, and Pago Pago. Most travellers from North America connect through Auckland, Sydney, or Honolulu.

A second airport, Maota Airport on Savai'i, handles domestic and some regional flights.

From the airport

Taxis and shared shuttles meet arriving flights. Agree on a fare before getting in — the ride to Apia costs roughly WST 80–100 by taxi. Several car rental desks operate at the terminal.

By sea

There is no regular passenger ferry service to international destinations, but cruise ships call at Apia port. The Samoa Shipping Corporation ferry between Mulifanua (Upolu) and Salelologa (Savai'i) is the main link between the two islands — see Getting Around.

Entry requirements

Most nationalities receive a free 60-day visitor permit on arrival. You need a valid return or onward ticket and a passport valid for at least six months. Check current requirements with the Samoa Immigration office before travel.
