Library and Nymphaeum

Foundations of the city's library and the nearby ornamental fountain

A short walk east of the Bouleuterion are the foundations of what archaeologists have identified as the library of Apollonia — the kind of institution that drew Greek and Roman students here in the late Republican period. Cicero refers to Apollonia in terms that imply a serious intellectual scene.

Next to the library are the remains of a nymphaeum, an ornamental fountain fed by aqueducts that once decorated this part of the city. The marble has long since gone but the brick core and channels are clear, and the spot is unusually green and shaded.
