Gjin Aleksi Mosque

A 17th-century village mosque famous for the acoustic jars set into its walls

The Gjin Aleksi Mosque stands in the village of Rusan, two kilometres west of Delvina. Completed in the 17th century and designated a Cultural Monument of Albania, the mosque is small but architecturally important — built of cut stone with a tile roof and an elegant minaret, and notable for the quality of its acoustics, which the original builders achieved by setting empty clay jars into recesses in the walls.

The mosque is generally locked outside prayer times, but the caretaker who lives nearby will often open it on request. The interior frescoes have suffered from centuries of weather and a long communist-era closure, but enough remains to give a sense of how richly decorated the building once was.
