Hayravank Monastery

Hayravank Monastery occupies a rocky promontory on the western shore of Lake Sevan, about ten kilometres south of Sevanavank. Unlike its more famous neighbour, Hayravank sees relatively few visitors, and the setting is arguably more dramatic — the tenth-century church of Surb Astvatsatsin perches right on the edge of the cliffs with unobstructed views over the lake.

The monastery was built in the tenth century and expanded in the thirteenth. The main church retains much of its original form, with the carved reliefs on the facade well-preserved. The surrounding compound has several khachkars and the remains of a gavit (vestibule) that collapsed in later centuries. The road to Hayravank branches off the main Sevan highway and is paved but narrow.
