Basilika Rankweil

Fortified pilgrimage church above Rankweil, with roots reaching back to the 8th century

Basilika Rankweil stands on a rise a short trip from Feldkirch, and is one of the area's most memorable churches. It began as a fortified church, with parts of the old defensive walls still visible around the site.

The mix of pilgrimage church and stronghold gives it more presence than a routine parish church. Come for the hilltop setting, the layered architecture, and the sense of an old religious site that also had to protect itself.
