The Barmsteine are two prominent limestone rock towers rising to 841 and 851 metres above sea level, on the ridge between Austria and Bavaria immediately west of Hallein. They are visible from much of the town and are a popular destination for day hikers, with marked paths leading up from Hallein and from Bad Dürrnberg.
The walk to the saddle between the towers takes about two hours from town and the views across to the Untersberg and back over Salzburg are excellent. The two towers themselves are climbed by experienced rock climbers; non-climbers should stop at the saddle. A small Gasthaus near the start of the trail serves food and drink.
