Keltenmuseum

Celtic-era finds from the Dürrnberg salt-mining settlement

The Keltenmuseum is a well-laid-out archaeological museum in an old salt-administration building on the Salzach. Its main subject is the Iron Age Celtic civilisation that worked the Dürrnberg salt deposits from around 600 BC — a community wealthy enough to import luxuries from Greece, Etruscan Italy, and the Mediterranean by trading salt north into central Europe.

The collection includes intricate bronze flagons, weapons, jewellery, and reconstructed grave goods from elite Celtic burials excavated above the town. An upper floor covers the later Roman and medieval periods. Worth ninety minutes and a useful companion to the salt mine itself. Closed Mondays.
