Paragliding at Kössen

One of Europe's premier paragliding sites, above the Unterberghorn

The ridge above Kössen — specifically the Unterberghorn and the slopes around Wallberg — produces some of the most consistent thermal conditions in the Alps. On a clear summer day, dozens of colourful wings fill the sky above the valley, circling in the rising air before gliding down to the landing field on the valley floor near the village.

Tandem flights are available for those who want to experience the conditions without training — the flight takes 20–30 minutes and covers the whole valley. For those who want to learn, Kössen has several established paragliding schools offering beginner courses through to competition preparation. The main flying season runs from May to October, with July and August typically offering the best and most consistent conditions.

A story
Kössen's reputation in the paragliding world rests on an unusual combination of geography: the valley acts as a thermal funnel, and the surrounding peaks create predictable, consistent lift that beginners and experienced pilots can both read easily. The annual Paragliding World Cup event held here regularly attracts pilots who rate the conditions better than famous sites in Switzerland and France.
