Taubensee

Clear mountain lake straddling the Austrian-Bavarian border

A clear mountain lake at about 1,138 metres, sitting in a hollow between Kössen and the German village of Unterwössen. The Taubensee is small — about 700 metres long — and surrounded by forest, with the mountains rising sharply on three sides. The water is cold and clean; swimming is popular in summer, though the season is short. A simple lakeside inn serves food and drinks.

The walk up from Kössen takes about 90 minutes through forest and meadow. There is also a road, and on summer weekends the car park fills quickly. Arriving on foot is more satisfying and means you get to enjoy the view of the lake appearing suddenly through the trees rather than from behind a car park.

A story
The Taubensee sits precisely on the border between Tyrol and Bavaria, which created an odd situation during the 20th century: the Austrian and German halves of the lake were administered separately, and swimming from one side to the other technically required crossing an international border. Today the border matters not at all, but old maps still show the political line running straight across the water.
