The Mooserwirt is the legendary après-ski institution at the base of the Gampen lift, and on a good snow day it is one of the more extraordinary scenes in European skiing. The outdoor terrace fills from around 3pm with skiers who have come straight off the mountain, and the party runs until the mountain staff close the doors — usually around 7pm.
Standards are unapologetically populist: the music is loud, the drinks are cheap by Austrian ski resort standards, and the atmosphere has a festival intensity that surprises people who associate skiing with Alpine gentility. If this is not your thing, arrive at the Mooserwirt on a quiet weekday morning, when it functions as a perfectly pleasant mountain café.
