Day Trips

Villach's position at the junction of three countries makes it one of the better bases in the eastern Alps for day trips. To the east, Klagenfurt is 45 minutes by train and worth a half-day for its Renaissance courtyards and Wörthersee lakeside. The Faaker See is 12 kilometres southeast — close enough to reach by bicycle — with warm swimming water and the distinctive island chapel in the middle of the lake. The Ossiacher See lies to the northeast, a longer and narrower lake with the pilgrimage church of Ossiach on its southern shore.

For cross-border excursions, Slovenia is the most rewarding option. The border crossing at the Karawankentunnel is 15 kilometres from Villach and on the other side the first major town is Jesenice, but most visitors continue another 30 kilometres to Kranjska Gora or Bled — the latter being one of the most photographed lakes in Europe, with a castle on an island and medieval pilgrimage church that justifies the crowds. Ljubljana, the Slovenian capital, is about 90 minutes by car or accessible by direct train, and is one of the most underrated small capitals in Central Europe.

Italy is also within reach: Udine (80 km south via the Tarvisio motorway) is a handsome Friulian city with good food and a relaxed atmosphere, and the mountains above Tarvisio itself offer hiking in a landscape that feels distinctly southern compared to the forests of Carinthia.
