The Steiner Tor is the old western gate of Krems and the symbol of the city. Its lower parts are late medieval, while the upper Baroque section was added later, giving the gate the slightly theatrical silhouette that appears on postcards and wine labels.
Walk through it from the west and you are immediately in the pedestrian old town. Landstrasse continues for about 700 metres through the historic centre, lined with burgher houses, courtyards, churches, cafes, and wine shops. The gate is not a long visit, but it is the right place to begin.
