The station is the reason there is a town here at all. The Baku–Tbilisi main line splits at Agstafa, with one branch curving south toward Armenia (now closed for thirty years) and the other continuing west to Georgia. The platform building is a workmanlike piece of late-Soviet architecture, plainer than the grander stations along the line, and is a useful orientation point — most onward transport leaves from in front of it.
Overnight trains to Baku still run from here, and they are a perfectly good way to cover the distance.
