The Agabala Guliyev's House is one of the most ornate of Baku's surviving oil-boom mansions, built around 1900 for the Azerbaijani oil-billionaire Agabala Guliyev to designs by the Polish architect Eugeniusz Skibinski. The facade combines Italian-Renaissance arches, art-nouveau ironwork, and elaborate carved-stone caryatids.
It functions today as government offices and is not open to the public, but the exterior is worth a slow walk-around. It stands on Istiglaliyyat Street alongside several other surviving oil-boom palaces — the entire block is essentially a textbook of late nineteenth-century imperial eclecticism.
