Fountain Square

Fountain Square — Fəvvarələr Meydanı in Azerbaijani — is the heart of the modern city centre, a long open plaza just outside the walls of the Old City with, as the name promises, a number of fountains. It's lined with cafes, brand-name shops, the city's main bookstore, and a steady stream of locals and tourists.

Come for the people-watching rather than the architecture. In the evenings the square fills with families, teenagers showing off cars, and street musicians; on weekends there are sometimes informal markets and pop-up performances. It's also a useful navigation point — most of the central restaurants and bars are within a few blocks.
