Muhammad Mosque

Muhammad Mosque is one of the oldest Islamic buildings in Baku's Old City, dating from the late 11th century. Its stone minaret, also known as Siniggala, is the detail to look for: it was damaged during a Russian naval bombardment in 1723 and long stood as a symbol of the city's resistance.

The mosque is small beside the grander monuments of Icherisheher, but that is part of its appeal. It fits naturally into the tight lanes of the old town, where the age of the stone and the narrowness of the streets do more work than any museum label.
