The Taza Pir Mosque is the principal Shia mosque in Baku and the seat of the Caucasus Muslim Board. Built between 1905 and 1914 with funds from the wealthy benefactor Nabat Khanum Ashurbeyova, it survived the Soviet period as a state office before being returned to religious use in the 1990s.
The exterior is sober — beige stone, a single dome, two slender minarets — and the interior is richly decorated, with calligraphic inscriptions, Qur'anic verses inlaid in gold, and an arched prayer hall lit by chandeliers. Modest dress is required; women need to cover their hair. The mosque welcomes respectful visitors outside prayer times.
