Mingechevir Reservoir

Largest lake in Azerbaijan, created by the 1953 hydroelectric dam

The Mingechevir Reservoir, created when the Kura River was dammed in 1953, covers 605 square kilometres and is the largest body of water in Azerbaijan. It transformed this section of the Kura valley entirely: the lake stretches for kilometres in both directions, and the shoreline park on the western bank of the town is the most pleasant public space in Mingechevir.

A small beach operates in summer, and boats can be hired on the waterfront. The reservoir is used for irrigation across a large part of eastern Azerbaijan, and you'll see the canal network spreading out from it as you arrive by road. In the late afternoon, when the light is flat and warm, the water turns silver and the dam is visible in the distance.

A story
When the dam was built and the reservoir filled in the early 1950s, thousands of years of Caucasian Albanian settlement — including cemeteries, craft workshops, and habitation layers dating back 5,000 years — were submerged. Archaeologists worked intensively through the 1940s to excavate what they could, and the finds transformed understanding of pre-Islamic Caucasian history.
