Ilisu Waterfall

A twenty-minute walk from the centre of Ilisu village brings you to one of the most attractive waterfalls in northwestern Azerbaijan. The Ilisu waterfall — locally known as Ram-Rama — drops around 25 metres over a cliff face into a small pool, surrounded by dense mixed forest. The path from the village descends steeply over loose rock and can be slippery in wet weather; sensible footwear matters.

The best time to visit is May or June, when snowmelt swells the flow and the surrounding forest is fully green. By late summer the falls shrink noticeably. If you want to hike beyond the waterfall, a longer trail follows the Gashgachay river upstream from Ilisu — this takes several hours and requires a reasonable level of fitness. Combine the waterfall with a walk around Ilisu village and you have a full half-day out of Qax.
