Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park

Primeval European forest, home to wild bison

Belovezhskaya Pushcha is one of the last fragments of the ancient forest that once stretched across the European plain. Located about 60km north of Brest, near the town of Kamenets, it is home to European bison — the largest land mammals on the continent, brought back from near-extinction in the 20th century — as well as elk, lynx, and beaver. The forest itself is primeval: some oaks here are over 500 years old. The park also carries a curious slice of history: in December 1991, it was here that the leaders of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus signed the agreement dissolving the Soviet Union and creating the CIS.
