Brest Fortress

Haunting WWII memorial where defenders held out against the German invasion

The Brest Fortress is one of the most important Soviet WWII memorials, built on the site where the Red Army made one of its most desperate stands against the German invasion. Walking through the ruins, past the haunting sculptures and eternal flame, is a genuinely moving experience. To get here from the centre, walk 20 minutes along Masherova Street or take bus 17 from the Hotel Intourist.

A story
When the German attack came at dawn on 22 June 1941, the fortress garrison was completely surrounded within hours. Outnumbered and cut off, defenders held out for weeks. "We were three. It was difficult for us but we die as heroes," one soldier scratched on a wall before the end.
