Peter and Paul Cathedral

Gomel's main Orthodox cathedral, built in the grounds of the palace complex

The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul stands within the palace park grounds, making it unusual among Belarusian churches in having a genuinely attractive setting rather than just a city street. It was built between 1809 and 1819 in a restrained neoclassical style at the commission of Count Rumyantsev, and has served continuously as the main Orthodox church of Gomel.

The interior is modest by the standards of large Russian Orthodox cathedrals but dignified. The cathedral is still an active place of worship; visitors are welcome outside of services. The combination of the white cathedral, the river, and the palace grounds behind it makes for the best photograph in Gomel.
