Minsk State Circus

A Soviet-era big-top with one of the best circus traditions in the former Soviet Union

The Minsk State Circus occupies a purpose-built circular building in the city centre, opened in 1959, and continues to put on performances in the classic Soviet circus tradition. Belarus has a strong circus heritage — Soviet circuses were genuinely world-class, and the training schools and performance traditions have been maintained.

A circus performance in Minsk is genuinely worth seeing: the productions are slick, the acrobatics are serious, and the mix of Soviet nostalgia and Belarusian national pride makes for an oddly moving evening. The building itself is an interesting piece of late-Stalin architecture. Children love it, obviously, but the quality of performance means adults enjoy it too.
