The Pinsk Ghetto Memorial marks one of the darkest parts of the city's history. Before the Second World War, Jewish life was central to Pinsk's identity; synagogues, schools, shops, and political organisations made the city a major Jewish centre in Polesia. The German occupation destroyed that world with brutal speed.
The memorial is not a large tourist sight, but it belongs on any honest walk through Pinsk. It gives context to the old streets around the centre, where the restored buildings can otherwise make the city's past look neater than it was.
