Solières Abbey

About three kilometres south of Huy, the ruins of Solières Abbey stand in the Hoyoux valley above the Meuse. The abbey was founded in the 12th century as a Cistercian nunnery and operated for over six centuries before being dissolved and largely demolished during the French Revolutionary period. What remains are the romanesque and gothic church walls, several outbuildings, and a restored gateway — enough to give a strong sense of what a prosperous medieval religious house looked like in this region.

The setting is excellent: the ruins sit in a wooded valley away from the main road, and the walk through the Hoyoux valley to reach them is pleasant in its own right. Combined with a half-day in Huy itself, this makes a full excursion from Namur or Liège.
