Leuven's bar scene is dominated by the Oude Markt, which claims — with some justification — to be the most densely packed drinking square in Europe. The concentration of over 60 cafes and bars around a single square makes it the de facto social centre for the student population. Beyond the Oude Markt, Tiensestraat and the streets around the Groot Begijnhof have quieter, more characterful options.
