Tchantchès Puppet Theatre

Traditional Walloon puppet shows in the Outremeuse quarter

Tchantchès is the beloved folklore puppet of the Outremeuse quarter in Liège, a good-natured, stubborn, sometimes rebellious character who symbolises the spirit of the Liègeois. Legend has it he appeared from between two stones in the year 760 and, as a baby, already preferred the local gin (pékèt) over milk.

The Musée Tchantchès on Rue Surlet in Outremeuse keeps the tradition alive with regular puppet theatre performances, particularly during the festive season. The puppet shows tell stories from Charlemagne and the Crusades, with Tchantchès as a loyal but headstrong companion. The museum houses a collection of traditional marionettes and is a charming stop for anyone exploring the lively Outremeuse neighbourhood.
