The Nete Rivers and Town Ramparts Walk

Lier is encircled by the confluence of the Grote Nete and Kleine Nete rivers, and the old ramparts walk that runs along the former town walls and the river banks is one of the pleasures of visiting. The route takes you past old mills, weeping willows, and the backs of medieval buildings, all reflected in the dark water.

The full circuit takes around an hour on foot and requires no particular fitness. A good starting point is behind the Zimmer Tower, heading south and then west along the Kleine Nete, past the Beguinage, and back north along the Grote Nete to the market area. In spring, the riverbanks are excellent for birdwatching — herons, kingfishers, and cormorants are common.
