Sint-Gummaruskerk (St. Gummarus Church)

Sint-Gummaruskerk is the principal church of Lier and one of the finest examples of Brabantine Gothic architecture in the province of Antwerp. Construction began in 1378 and continued through the 15th and 16th centuries. The exterior is an impressive mass of pale stone with elaborate tracery; the interior is spacious and flooded with light from the large stained-glass windows.

The windows are the real glory. The oldest date from the 15th century, and the collection includes examples from several periods spanning nearly four centuries. The carved choir stalls, the rood screen, and the treasury with its medieval reliquaries are also worth examining in detail. The church stands on the Zimmerplein, a short walk from the Grote Markt, and admission is free.

A story
Under the high altar of Sint-Gummaruskerk lies the grave of Olav Engelbrektsson, the last Roman Catholic Archbishop of Norway, who fled his country after the Reformation in 1537 and died in exile in Lier in 1538. The Reformation drove the last Norwegian bishop into a quiet Flemish church — an unexpected end to a dramatic career.
