Refuge of the Abbey of Tongerlo

The Refuge of the Abbey of Tongerlo was once the Mechelen refuge of the abbey, a place to retreat to in times of attack or trouble. Today it houses De Wit, a royal tapestry workshop and restoration centre.

It is worth seeking out if you are interested in the city's quieter historic buildings or in textile craft. Guided visits are limited, often on Saturday mornings, so check ahead rather than assuming you can simply walk in.
