A few minutes' walk north of the Grote Markt, Sint-Janskerk is an unassuming 15th-century brick parish church from the outside but holds one of Rubens's finest altarpiece commissions: the Adoration of the Magi, a glowing triptych painted in 1617 for this church and still hanging above the high altar. The central panel is among his strongest religious works of that decade.
The rest of the church is worth the visit too — a beautifully restored Gothic interior with a rich set of wooden confessionals and a high pulpit. It is quieter than the cathedral and you can usually have the Rubens almost to yourself.
