Kusttram (Coastal Tram)

The Kusttram is the easiest way to explore the Belgian coast beyond Ostend, and also one of the best tram rides in Europe. Running the full 67 kilometres of Belgian coastline from De Panne to Knokke-Heist, it passes through beach resorts, nature reserves, and fishing harbours, stopping in front of dunes and beside villas that haven't changed since the 1920s.

From Ostend you can reach quieter resorts like De Haan — a fin-de-siècle garden village preserved as a national monument — or Koksijde, with its large dune nature reserve, in under an hour. The tram runs every 10 minutes in summer, less frequently in winter. Day tickets cover unlimited travel the full length of the line and are the economical way to do it.

A story
The Kusttram runs 67 kilometres from De Panne in the west to Knokke-Heist in the east, making it the longest tram line in the world by continuous route length. It passes through 37 stops and crosses every municipality on the Belgian coast. Travellers have been riding it since 1885, and the original route has barely changed — the Belgian coast is narrow enough that a single line serves the whole thing.
