The main square of Sint-Niklaas is one of the largest in Belgium, a broad open space flanked by the 19th-century Town Hall and surrounded by cafes, restaurants, and civic buildings. The square hosts a regular market and serves as the focal point for the city's festivals and events.
Most notably, the Grote Markt is the launch site for the International Balloon Festival held each September — dozens of hot air balloons inflate and ascend from the square in a spectacle that draws crowds from across Belgium. Outside festival times the square is pleasant but quiet, and makes a good orientation point for exploring the compact historic centre on foot.
