The Church of Saint Joseph on the main road through Waterloo contains a remarkable collection of memorial plaques and monuments to British officers killed at the battle. Wellington attended services here, and the church became a natural focus for commemorative additions throughout the 19th century. The plaques line the walls of the nave in dense rows — a visible record of the names of the dead that is more moving than any formal monument.
The church itself is an 18th-century domed building, unusual for Belgium in following a classical rather than Gothic design. It stands next to the Wellington Museum in the centre of the town of Waterloo and is easy to combine with a visit. Entry is free.
