The Panorama of the Battle of Waterloo is a circular rotunda housing a monumental panoramic painting depicting the moment of Napoleon's final cavalry charge. Painted in 1912, the work wraps 360 degrees around the viewing platform and creates a remarkably convincing illusion of standing in the middle of the battle.
The painting captures the chaos of the afternoon fighting — horses, smoke, fallen soldiers, the ridge in the distance — with a level of detail and atmosphere that surprises visitors who expect something historical and dusty. It has been recently restored and the colours are vivid. This is one of the more unusual art experiences in Belgium, worth visiting even if you have limited interest in the battle itself. It sits directly next to the Lion's Mound and the Memorial 1815.
