Jablanica's broken railway bridge is one of the Balkans' most theatrical war memorials. The original span was tied to the 1943 Battle of the Neretva, when Yugoslav partisans blew the bridge as part of a deception before crossing the river with their wounded.
The twisted bridge you see today also carries film history. For the 1969 epic Battle of Neretva, the bridge was rebuilt and blown up again, but the smoky footage was unusable and the final scene was recreated elsewhere. The remains still make the story feel immediate.
