Rakitnica Canyon Hiking

The Rakitnica Canyon is one of the more dramatic gorge systems in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with canyon walls dropping 600–800 metres in places. The canyon is carved by the Rakitnica River through limestone karst terrain, and sections of the canyon floor are accessible only on foot. This is genuinely remote hiking — no signage, no services, and limited mobile coverage.

The approach from the Neretva village side gives access to the upper canyon. A longer traverse of the full canyon takes multiple days and is done by organised groups; day walks from the village explore the canyon rim and some of the easier descent routes. The landscape rewards effort: vertical limestone walls, glimpses of the river below, and complete solitude.
