Šerefudin's White Mosque

A startling work of late-modernist architecture sitting unobtrusively at the edge of the old town. The exterior is a sequence of plain whitewashed forms, almost cubist, with no minaret in the conventional sense — just a free-standing pylon and a low dome. Inside, the prayer hall is flooded with light from concealed clerestory windows, with carpets, lamps, and the angular calligraphy designed as a single composition.

It is a working mosque, not a museum. Ask politely at the entrance and dress modestly; visitors are welcome outside prayer times.

A story
Designed by the Bosnian architect Zlatko Ugljen and completed in 1980, the White Mosque is one of the most celebrated modernist religious buildings in the former Yugoslavia. It won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1983 — the first European building to receive the prize.
